A sufficiently large mass inhomogeneity will gravitationally lense high-redshift galaxies. It is possible to calculate the size of this effect if assumptions are made about the distribution of mass in clusters. If most of the mass in the Universe is clumped on the scale of clusters, then the ellipticity distribution of distant sources could be used to discriminate between different values of total mass density. A population of intrinsically circular sources observed at a redshift of one would set limits on the amount of matter in clusters. In addition, the effects of lensing by clusters on specific geometric measurements of a single object might be substantial.
