The brightness distribution of distant and compact sources due to gravitational lensing is investigated, with an emphasis on the high amplification part of the distribution. In the case of extended deflectors (≡ King galaxies) with short focal lengths there is often found a significant higher probability of getting high amplifications than with point mass deflectors found earlier by Refsdal (1970) (up to a factor 6). From their results, however, the authors cannot explain all quasars as highly amplified images of Seyfert galaxy nuclei.
