Abstract

It has been claimed that some gravitational lenses in which a background quasar is multiply-imaged by a single foreground galaxy support the existence of dark massive halos in elliptical galaxies. We reexamine this claim by considering the lensing effects of spherical galaxies with and without a dark halo. The fundamental assumption is that the mass distribution of dark halos is constrained by the sort of disc- halo coupling inferred from the observed extended rotation curves of spiral galaxies, i.e. the visible matter dominates the mass distribution in the inner regions and the rotation curve due to the combined luminous and dark mass distribution reaches a maximum and stays flat far out. The image splitting of an individual lens system is only slightly sensitive to the existence of such a halo. Within the accuracy of the Faber-Jackson relation one cannot definitely discriminate between galaxies with and without halos in the well-established individual lens systems. However one system Q0414+0534 with a recently detected lens candidate, is apparently inconsistent with imaging by a single elliptical galaxy having no halo. Statistically, an unrealizably large number of lens systems is required to discriminate between galaxies with and without dark halos.
