In contradistinction to the results of Lynden-Bell and Katz (1985), it is shown by physical arguments that the gravitational field energy of a Schwarzschild black hole should lie within the hole's horizon. The present theory is based on the relation between the extrinsic curvature of a spacelike hypersurface embedded in the spacetime, and its scalar curvature. The results are in agreement with the Penrose quasi-local mass which, in the case of Schwarzschild, lies completely inside the hole (Tod, 1983).
