A multi-dimensional explicit hydrodynamic code has been used to follow the early isothermal collapse of rotating protostellar clouds not constrained by the condition of reflection symmetry about their equatorial plane. It is found that local deviations from equatorial symmetry are likely to occur during the process of ring formation in the inner flow of axisymmetric two-dimensional (2D) clouds. For slowly rotating configurations with a moderately high thermal energy, these features lead to a nonnegligible equatorial asymmetry in the structure of the forming rings. In the more realistic three-dimensional (3D) case, these local irregularities have an azimuthal dependence which then behaves as a non-axisymmetric perturbation (NAP) arising in the inner high-density regions of the collapsing cloud. The induced NAP grows, affecting the structure of stable long-lived rings. This effect provides a dynamic mechanism to start fragmentation in the extreme limit of having initially axisymmetric configurations, which otherwise would remain perfectly axially symmetric.
