A rigorous calculation of the gravitational analog of the magnetic force using the general theory of relativity is presented. It is observed that approaches based on the use of special relativity only are inadequate. They fail to reveal the existence of certain higher-order terms and of nonlinear mixed terms related to the consideration that both the electromagnetic field and the gravitational field itself act as sources of the gravitational field. In addition, in these approaches there is no unambiguous way of determining the correct law of transformation of forces, which emerges in the general relativistic treatment.
