The method of using a thin absorber and tracking chambers to identify particles in air showers has been studied using a test setup in the GRAND air shower array. Dramatic differences between muons and electrons are seen in the fraction of particles which stop in the absorber and in the distribution of scattering angles for particles which penetrate the absorber. A simple algorithm is applied to 93% of two samples of data which were preidentified as muons and as electrons respectively. Of these 96.2+/-0.2% of the muons and 95.1+/-0.6% of the electrons are correctly identified.
