Grad-Shafranov (GS) reconstruction is a data analysis tool for recovering two-dimensional, coherent field structures in a space plasma from single- or multi-spacecraft data taken during an encounter with the structures. The technique is applicable to systems governed by an equation of the GS type. It consists of integration of this equation as a spatial initial-value problem, using data along a spacecraft trajectory as initial conditions. The output is in the form of maps in the reconstruction (x-y) plane of magnetic field and various plasma properties. In this paper we discuss three applications of the method: (1) Magneto-hydrostatic structures at the magnetopause, governed by the classical GS equation. We compare currents in the magnetopause, predicted by the reconstruction, with currents obtained from the Cluster curlometer application and also directly from Ampère's law in one dimension. (2) We discuss theory and first Cluster results from reconstruction based on a modified GS equation that includes the effects of significant field-aligned flows. Comparison with results from magneto-hydrostatic reconstruction of the same events indicates that these latter results are fairly robust. The new code has been benchmarked against an exact analytical solution. (3) We discuss briefly a recent application of GS reconstruction to recover streamlines in the low-latitude boundary layer. Details of this study will be presented separately by Hasegawa et al.
