A Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver onboard a microsatellite can be used for multiple applications. The good accuracy of the positioning can be used to monitor the small perturbations of the satellite orbit caused by the non-homogenous field of gravity of the planet Earth. These measurement results can be used to determine the gravity field of the Earth more accurately and thus improve the geoid shape model of the planet. Another application closely related to the positioning is the determination of the attitude of the satellite. This is accomplished by measuring the phase difference of the GPS signal simultaneously by three separate antennas on the top of the satellite. A GPS receiver can be used to measure the properties of the atmosphere by the means of radio occultation. When the positioning signal propagates through the atmosphere it is perturbed by the refractivity of the medium. The amount of this refraction can be measured by a microsatellite as the GPS satellite crosses the earth's horizon. From this one can derive the refractive index of the signal's propagation path. The accuracy GPS profiling measurements fulfill the requirements of meteorological and climatological applications. My presentation will describe the GPS small satellite applications in general and atmospheric profiling by radio occultation in detail. A comparison to other measurement methods is presented.
