Astronomy is becoming more digitized and with it the data is becoming more manageable in storage, mobility, analysis, and visual projection. This has sped up the rate at which science can be conducted and it will continue to increase alongside technological advancement. The National Virtual Obversvatory represents such a progression and the next step is making its archival data more versatile for querying, utilization, and analysis. By synthesizing Google Sky Maps with the NVO technology an advanced interface has been generated where scientists and astronomy enthusiasts can visually interact with observation footprints, data catalogs, and images in a virtual sky environment. This technology is currently being ported to several projects with uses varying from displaying large surveys (such as MIPSGAL) to building a web-based guide star finder to checking regions of the sky for potential proposal targets.
This project was started as part of the National Virtual Observatory's Summer School workshop 2008.
