GnŌmonikē Technē, the art of gnomonics, was a recognized branch of applied mathematics in Greek antiquity. The variety of ancient sundials that survive show us that ancient dialers were prolific and inventive. This paper places ancient gnomonics in scientific and cultural perspective and offers an overview of ancient dial types.
