The Global Network of Astronomical Telescopes, Inc. (GNAT) has for the past eight years been conducting a digital survey of the sky directed primarily at the discovery and characterization of variable stars, which has resulted in the generation of a large archive of digital data. This archive is unique in many respects and thus provides an interesting source for data mining. The GNAT IYA 2009 educational outreach program, targeting secondary schools and community colleges, is designed to provide an exciting, hands-on science discovery opportunity for students and teachers. The GNAT program provides three to four day workshop training for teachers to enable them to mentor an extended network of students. The student investigations are built around measurements of subsets of the few thousand binary star systems contained in our survey images. We have developed an astronomical "mini-curriculum" that provides a background in the fundamental astronomical concepts, particularly in basic stellar astronomy, that are required to understand the nature and significance of binary stars and to provide the background needed for the intelligent handling and reduction of the data. The participating students are mentored in the scientific process from the initial acquisition of relevant data through the preparation of a manuscript for publication. In this presentation we describe the program curriculum, present examples of the data sources, and show examples of the final results of analyzing binary star images.
