Small telescopes have always been powerful tools for astronomy, and the new technology aspects available now will only amplify this value. There are many advantage of new generation small telescopes, ones using modern CCD imaging detectors and taking full advantage of computer control and communication networking. A new non-profit organization, GNAT, Inc., has been created with the goals of developing a global network of such small telesocpes and in being a catalyst for all those interested in the effective use of small telesopes for research and for education.
