Merritt suggests that cD envelopes and the diffuse light in the Coma galaxy cluster have the same origin: they are composed of stars tidally stripped from galaxies during galaxy cluster collapse. If this account is correct, globular clusters should be stripped as well, creating a galaxy cluster-wide population of globulars. The anomalously large globular cluster populations around M87/Virgo, NGC 3311/A1060/Hydra I, NGC 1399/Fornax I and NGC 4874/A1656/Coma may be examples of such systems.
