During its two missions in November 1994 and August 1997 the CRISTA (CRyogenic Infrared Spectrometers and Telescopes for the Atmosphere) experiment measured infrared emissions of ozone at 9.6~μ m, of carbon dioxide at 4.3 and 15~μ m and of carbon monoxide at 4.7~μ m. A detailed non-local thermodynamic equilibrium model was used to perform the inversion of radiances to number densities for individual profiles. The retrieval yields comprehensive data sets of CO2 and O3 densities in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere. The CO2 volume mixing ratio (vmr) in the 70-100~km region is significantly smaller than obtained from previous rocket borne mass spectrometer data, but is in good agreement with the data obtained by other 4.3~μ m emission and absorption experiments. The latitudinal variation of CO2 density is maximum at 100~km and varies a factor of two from 70o~N to the equator. These variations are compared with the results obtained by the TIME-GCM. The O3 vmr height profiles for day- and nighttime are in good agreement with other experiments. A tertiary ozone maximum in the middle mesosphere at winter high latitudes was observed. The ozone data is analysed by means of the ROSE-2 model.
