At the Atmospheric Physics Laboratory, University College London, sophisticated computational models of the global ionosphere-thermosphere system have been developed for the planets Earth, Mars, Jupiter, and Titan, with a model of Saturn in development. Recent work using the Jovian Ionospheric Model (JIM) has been concerned with the coupling between ions, and the co-existing neutral atmosphere, in the Jovian auroral ovals. An increase in the energy and momentum forcing (resulting from an increase in forcing from the magnetosphere) generates atmospheric gravity waves which propagate equatorward in both hemispheres. The jovian results will be discussed in relation to similar modelling studies using the Earth model, CTIP.
