Atomic oxygen plays a very important role in the upper atmospheric energy balance. Characterizing the global atomic oxygen distribution and its variabilities is key to our understanding of mesospheric thermal structure. Aboard the Thermosphere Ionosphere Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics (TIMED) spacecraft, the Sounding of the Atmosphere using Broadband Emission Radiometry (SABER) and the TIMED Doppler Interferometer (TIDI) instruments can provide indirect measurements of this energetically important species. Atomic oxygen densities are derived by these two instruments from several airglow measurements that are emitted either by excited species that are produced by chemical reactions that directly involve atomic oxygen, such as the O2(1Σ) and O(1S) emissions measured by HRDI/UARS and TIDI/TIMED, or by excited species that relate to chemical species in equilibrium with atomic oxygen, such as the OH Meinel band emission measured by HRDI/UARS and SABER/TIMED. In this paper, we will present the atomic oxygen density distribution deduced from airglow emissions observed by these three instruments and report its observed temporal and spatial variability. Coincident density measurements will be used to evaluate the consistency among the three measurement data sets and to provide the best cross-calibrations (and corrections) needed for decadal scale variability study. Issues related to absolute radiance measurement accuracy (i.e. TIDI detector icing), altitude registration (i.e. TIDI telescope pointing offsets), and quantitative knowledge of chemical reaction rates involved will be discussed.
