An examination is conducted of the global covariation between midocean-ridge basalt chemistry and upper-mantle shear-wave velocity. There is a strong correlation between basalt chemistry and seismic velocity variations at 100-170 km depths, and lateral scale-lengths of 1.0-2.4 km; this lends support to a hypothesized common thermal origin for the two signal types. Points which depart from the general correlation may identify interesting anomalies deserving of further study.
