Nimbus IV observations of ozone by the Backscatter Ultraviolet instrument and stratospheric temperatures deduced from Selective Chopper Radiometer measurements are comparatively discussed. Global mean monthly maps of total ozone and ozone amount between 10-1 mb are presented along with maps of lower and upper stratospheric temperatures to reveal the interaction. Observational evidence is given of planetary wave activity influencing the meridional structure of zonal mean ozone and temperature distribution during a stratospheric warming in the Northern Hemisphere.
