The results obtained by the Stratospheric and Mesospheric Sounder (SAMS)
aboard the Nimbus 7 satellite are reviewed. Information obtained by SAMS
on the temperature structure, volcanic dust content, and minor
constituent abundances of the stratosphere and mesosphere is discussed.
Future activities in this area are addressed.
