Geographic information systems (GISs), which capture, store, organize, update, manipulate, analyze and display geologic and geographic information, are currently being compiled for Mars research. The basic strength of a GIS lies in its ability to separate out layers of diverse information at such varied scales as those of rock-units, relative ages, structures, locations, and remotely sensed data, in order to compile and quantitatively compare their temporal and spatial relations.
