Scientific paper

An overview of the Giotto mission is given. The history and general characteristics of Halley's Comet are reviewed, and the plan of the mission is sketched: Giotto will be launched in July, 1985, and encounter the comet eight months later at a velocity of 250,000 km/h, approaching to within 500 km of the nucleus and completing the experiments and data transmission within 4 h. The 54-kg scientific payload, the heliocentric orbit, and the spacecraft design (structure, solid-fuel motor, particle shield, antenna-directing mechanism, temperature control, attitude control, power supply, and telecommunication/data-transmission system) are characterized. The organization, history, and financing of the project are briefly discussed.
