The current state of the understanding of giant molecular clouds in interstellar space is reviewed. Particular consideration is given to techniques for the observation of molecular gas, studies of the distribution of molecular gas in the Galaxy, physical processes in giant molecular clouds, and the interaction of giant molecular clouds with other objects of the Galaxy.
