Models describing the interaction between the solar wind and the magnetosphere support the concept of a predominantly dawn to dusk electric field in the night part of the magnetosphere. Pedersen et al. (1984) have shown the existence of such a field and its impulsive increase during magnetic substorms. For March 22, 1979 a consistent set of electric field data has been compiled from the dayside magnetosphere. The data reflect the interaction between the solar wind and the magnetosphere on this day. The present investigation presents electric field data which have been obtained by the double probe experiment on GEOS 2. It is pointed out that magnetospheric dynamics on March 22, 1979 are characterized by a sudden storm commencement (SSC) around 0830 UT and two substorms following the SSC. It is found that the SSC does not cause any significant change in the plasma flow pattern at the geostationary orbit. Conclusions based on the electric field data are discussed.
