Geophysical results and geological data from the southern portion of the Narragansett basin define three inferred fault systems trending NW-SE, NNE-SSW, and NE-SW. All three conjectured fault trends, also evident within the surrounding southern New England region, may be older zones of weakness related to an early Paleozoic episode of deformation. These geophysical, structural, and temporal similarities between the southern portion of the Narragasett basin and the Fundy rift system to the north indicate these basins were part of a continuous rift system created in Late Devonian to Permian time by differential motion between North America and Africa-Europe. The rift zone is presently defined in northern Newfoundland and Nova Scotia; through Gulf of Maine, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island; and extends offshore for an undetermined distance.
