Data obtained in direct measurements of the equatorial electric field during a geomagnetic storm are used to show that a large decrease in field intensity observed near the dip equator is a consequence of the reversal of the equatorial electrojet current. This phenomenon is caused by the imposition of an additional westward electric field on the equatorial ionosphere in connection with the interaction of solar wind with the interplanetary magnetic field. Magnetic field variations at low latitudes during a geomagnetic storm are compared with the auroral index and the interplanetary magnetic field parameters.
