In the present paper, a straightforward approximation is used to estimate cutoff probabilities for particles impinging vertically on the satellite, i.e., in the direction of the radius vector toward the center of the earth. It is seen that the best way to calculate exact cutoff probabilities for a satellite is to use the trajectory tracing technique. However, since this technique implies a large amount of computer time, it is restricted to geostationary satellites or to cases where the amount of data needed is not large. In all other cases, especially if the influence of the geomagnetic shielding averaged over a long mission is of interest, one way to solve the problem is to use an approximation of the type proposed.
