The current understanding of the relationship between geomagnetic activity and solar activity is reviewed. It is pointed out that interplanetary investigations have led to a new conception of the solar origin of geomagnetic activity. In particular, it has been found that the overwhelming majority of this activity (about 91.5 percent) comes from the distribution of the solar wind in the earth's orbit under the effect of the solar dipole cycle. The topology of the coronal magnetic field which results is a global phenomenon whose sources are independent of the sunspot activity observed on the disk.
