Cassini has a complex geologic history, and was produced on the cratered highlands of Mars during the late Noachian epoch. as a result of the impact event, the basin's walls, mountainous peak ring, and ejecta units were emplaced, and lava flows filled areas within as well as in areas outside the crater rim. The basin has since been modified by the superposition of younger craters.
