A brief geological outline of the landing site of Luna 16 automatic lunar station is presented that includes data on the strucutral features, estimates of thickness, and stratigraphic positions of the lava infilling of the Sea of Fertility. Determinations are made of the relative duration of surface formation near the landing site based on data of the statistical counts of crater distribution. Descriptions and several morphometric characteristics of noncrater forms of relief complicating the surface of the Sea of Fertility are given. Possible sources of the regolith material returned by Luna 16 are examined.
