The association of observed local scale geologic structures with basic processes such as basaltic volcanism, and the extrapolation of larger regional scales in order to assess the relative importance of such processes on Venus and Mars is studied. The data considered are of two types: lander spacecraft digital images with centimeter resolution, and orbital radar measurements averaged over 30 to 100 km radius footprints. The Viking lander images of Mars and Venera panoramas of Venus were systematically analyzed in terms of observable surface features such as blocks, bedrock, and soils. Rock populations on Mars and Venus were statistically compared to those in hyperarid regions on Earth and found to differ in properties related to their erosional histories. Transient dust phenomena triggered by spacecraft landings were analyzed in order to constrain the dust particle size spectrum. Observation of Venus from the Pioneer-Venus altimeter provide both 0.1 to 10 m-scale roughness and normal incidence reflectivity information about the surface that can be compared with surface images from the Venera landers.
