Physical relationships between topography, lithospheric stresses, and the geoid are investigated analytically to establish constraints on deep dynamical structures. Consideration is limited to an earth made of Newtonian fluid with an infinite Prandtl number and a depth variation for the average density and viscosity. It is found that self-gravitation and compressibility effects must be considered to account for long wavelength mechanical processes. Choosing a model of simple spherical earth structures permits evaluation of various configurations of isostasy. A mechanical response to the depthwise density distribution is modeled in terms of spherical harmonics. The relationship between an induced geoid and topography is examined in terms of the concepts of admittance and the Runcorn number.
