Impact Craters, Microtektites, Australasian, Tektites

Based on geographic distribution in size, shape, petrography, and composition of Australasian tektites, several authors have hypothesized that the source crater is in Indochina. However, the size and exact location of the source crater is still unknown. In this study we have used geographic variations in abundance of Australasian microtektites to predict the location and size of the source crater. The location of the source crater was predicted by picking hypothetical crater locations and regressing microtektite abundance (number > 125 micrometers/cm^2) vs. distance from each hypothetical crater location. Trial and error showed that the best fit was obtained by regressing log number vs. log distance. The location that explained the data the best (i.e., gave the highest r^2 value) is located at 11.5 degrees N latitude and 106 degrees E longitude (log number = (-4.5 x log dist)+17.8, r^2=0.80). This site is located just southeast of Tonle Sap, a 30 by 100 km lake that has recently been suggested as possibly being the Australasian tektite source crater (Hartung, 1990). The size of the source crater was calculated by converting the number of microtektites (>125 micrometer diameter) per square centimeter at each site to an equivalent thickness and using the relationship given by McGetchin et al. (1973), which relates crater size, distance, and ejecta thickness to estimate the size of a crater at 11.5 degrees N latitude and 106 degrees E longitude that would produce the calculated thickness of the microtektite layer at the nine sites with the highest concentration of microtektites. This indicates a crater with a diameter of 40 +- 7 km. This size is considered a minimum because the microtektites less than 125 micrometers in diameter and the unmelted impact ejecta were not included in the calculation of the ejecta thickness at each site.
