Attention is given to aspects of the geometry of the Ernst (1976) spacetime, from the standpoint of time-like and light-like geodesics in the equatorial plane. After obtaining the propagation and trajectory equations for the equatorial geodesics, a qualitative description of the motion in question is developed from a study of the effective potential. This analysis is applied to the case of supermassive black holes, such as may exist at the center of some galaxies, whose magnetic field mechanism has been discussed by Wild and Kerns (1980). The particular case of equatorial circular geodesics is considered in closing.
