The mineralogical, chemical, and isotopic characteristics of sedimentary carbonates from Archean greenstone belts (including the Michipicoten Greenstone Belt, Canada; the Uchi Greenstone Belt, Canada; the 'Upper Greenstones', Zimbabwe; and the Older Schist Belt, India), and, thus of the Archean sea water, were investigated. The dominant carbonate lithology of the younger (about 2.8 Ga old) greenstones was found to be limestone, while the lithologies of the older (about 3.5 Ga old) greenstones and the iron formations of the greenstones of all ages, were ferroan dolomites and siderites. It is suggested that the mantlelike nature of the Sr-87/Sr-86 signal, the enrichment in Mn and Fe, and the depletion in O-18 found in greenstone belt carbonates are all consistent with the proposition that the Archean oceans were strongly influenced by a pervasive 'mantle' flux.
