Near-surface sediments of the Black Sea were found to contain a wide variety of tetrapyrrole pigments; significant quantities occur in homologous series closely related to petroporphyrins. The homologous series of pigments had each homolog differing by 14 amu. Within a sediment sample a number of homologous series were observed: 1. (1) one containing mass 476 (DPEP series); 2. (2) another containing mass 478 (Etio series); and 3. (3) a series having homologs above mass 600. Spectrally, the tetrapyrroles appeared to contain significant proportions of chlorins, indicating that some of the compounds may be dihydro DPEP and associated homologous members.
