The Heemskirk granite consists of two major granites: a red and a white variety; the latter is subdivided into series A and B. The white granites are characterized by exceptionally high initial Sr 87 / Sr 86 ratios (0.734 and 0.741). They have also abnormally low Th / U ratios when compared with the red variety as well as with granitic rocks in general. Their low K / Rb ratios reflect their strongly differentiated nature, and the abundance of cassiterite and sulphide mineralization within the white granites emphasizes the importance of a vapour phase. An abundance of tourmaline in all granitic varieties is further evidence of the presence of volatiles. Xenoliths are abundant in the white but non-existent in the red granite. An interpretation of the granite genesis that is consistent with all the data assumes that the white granites are largely the product of the vapour phase acting on the top portion of the granite intrusion. Considerable incorporation of the quartz feldspathic sediments of the roof occurred in this zone. The parent magma subsequently intruded and crystallized to form the red granite.
