Spacecraft-obtained geochemical data have been supposed capable of resolving the 'space weathering' controversy by linking S-class asteroids to a melted or unmelted meteoric type. The present literature survey shows that many proposed weathering processes can affect chemistry in an asteroid's surface layer as well as spectral reflectance.
