The Abitibi greenstone belt and Pontiac subprovince (PS) are adjacent greenstone-plutonic and metasedimentary-dominated terranes separated by a major fault zone. Metasediments from these terranes were compared in terms of major- and trace-element and O- and Nd-isotope compositions, and detrital zircon ages. Previous geochemical studies are reviewed and sampling techniques are described. The contrasting provenances of metasediments obtained do not fit the previously proposed accretionary prism model and suggest separate initial geodynamic settings and later tectonic juxtaposition of the Abiti southern volcanic zone (SVZ) and PS. Results indicate that some of the PS metasediments were derived from juvenile rocks, others suggest various degrees of contribution from older evolved crust mixed with juvenile rocks. If the PS represents an accretionary prism to the Abiti SVZ, then oblique subduction may have allowed the PS to juxtapose or sample exotic source rocks.
