New high-precision isotopic data from lavas of the Aden volcano, South Arabia, show a correlation between 87Sr/86Sr and 87Rb/86Sr. The main correlation which is taken to be equivalent to an isochron of 33.1 +/- 6.0 m.y. indicates an age which is considerably older than the 5-6 m.y. age of eruption documented by published K-Ar dates. The older age is interpreted as the time of a fractionation event in the source region which was subsequently subjected to large degrees of melting, producing magmas of a variety of compositions. Arguments against a contamination origin for this correlation are presented.
