It is shown analytically that spiral shock waves, which occur in galaxies in the presence of density waves, will generate a galactic magnetic field with a spiral structure. Calculations are made to determine the magnitude and configurations of the normal and tangential fields generated in this way and are found to agree with present observations. It is noted that the intensity of shock-generated magnetic fields should increase faster in the central regions of galaxies and with an increase in the number of spiral arms.
