Data on Type II bursts for the flare-active period of August 1972 were interpreted to determine whether shock waves observed to be propagating in the interplanetary medium are of coronal origin. The acceleration and time lag dynamics of four shock waves generated in the Mc Math 11 976 region were analyzed using Pioneer 9 and the earth as detectors. The most significant result was that a linear time lag was found for only one of the waves. Consideration was also given to the amount of mechanical energy freed in each of the four flares.
