Results of a radio-transmission experiment involving the generation of VLF signals at the modulation frequency during the propagation of high-power short-waves in the ionosphere are presented. The carrier frequency of the transmitter was 3.3 MHz; the AM frequency was 2 kHz. It is shown that, in individual cases, artificial VLF signals could be generated under magnetically quiet conditions with amplitudes comparable to those observed under magnetically disturbed conditions. These artificial signals have anomalously large (up to 1 Hz) broadenings of the frequency spectrum, which suggests the existence of a generation mechanism different from the current-sheet modulation mechanism.
