A theory is presented to account for the unique type of proton cyclotron echoes registered on Alouette-2 ionograms. According to the theory, the high-power RF transmission produces an electrostatic plasma wave that creates a fast electron stream during the wave damping process. A proton concentration about the antenna is also developed by the RF pulse; this concentration repeats itself every proton cyclotron period and forms a pseudowave of the electric field. The interaction between the pseudowave and the electron stream gives rise to a plasma wave with a frequency in the same range as the RF transmission.
