An omnidirectional gamma-ray telescope with a high energy resolution was constructed for balloon nuclear astronomy. This telescope counts, essentially, on a gamma-ray spectrometer which is formed by a 76 cu cm Ge(Li) detector, with a resolution of 4.48 KeV at 1.33 MeV (60) Co and 11.4 KeV at 6.13 MeV (Pu-C), surrounded by an active shield (anticoincidence) of plastic scintillators 1.8 cm thick. The Ge(Li) detector is mounted inside a cryostat cooled by liquid nitrogen. Two 2048 channel encoders are calibrated to measure gamma-rays in the energy intervals of 25 KeV-4.5 MeV and 96 KeV-7.4 MeV, assuring channel windows less than 4 KeV/channel. Monoenergetic gamma-rays emitted by (22) Na, (137) Cs, (133) Ba, (152) Eu, (241) Am, Am-Be, Pu-C sources and electrons from beta decays of (90) Sr-(90) Y and (137) Cs conversion electrons were used to calibrate the spectrometer. A telescope sensitivity of or = .003 photons cm (-2) S (-1) was estimated with a 3-sigma confidence level, for the detection of the oxygen line at 6.129 MeV, during a 3-hour observation at 3.5 mb, in the atmosphere of the Southern Hemisphere, at 12 GV.
