With reference to ATEL #1221 announcing the possible detection at gamma-ray energies of the blazar S5 0716+71, the GLAST-AGILE Support Program (GASP) of the Whole Earth Blazar Telescope (WEBT) reports on the observation of an optical flare of this blazar in the same period. The source brightened from R = 12.92 +/- 0.01 on September 8 to R = 12.58 +/- 0.04 on September 12, it was R = 12.60-12.65 the day after, and faded to R = 13.01-13.03 on September 15, 2007.
