Since 1980, the observations of the γ-ray spectrometers aboard the SMM or Hinotori satellites have considerably improved our knowledge of the γ-ray line emissions produced during solar flares by accelerated ions. However, both experiments did not detect the predicted lines above 10 MeV and had too low sensitivities to address problems such as the precise relative timing of individual γ-ray lines and of the bremsstrahlung component produced by the flare accelerated electrons above a few hundred keV. In an attempt to solve such problems, the GASOL experiment has been designed for providing solar γ-ray data with a higher sensitivity than previous experiments. The main characteristics of the experiment are described and some aspects of its scientific impact are discussed.
