Ignition transient of a solid rocket motor with finocyl geometry is simulated by means of an unsteady quasi-one-dimensional model and compared with experimental results. The analysis of the flowfield evolution is performed investigating the time history of pressure, temperature and the other main characteristics of the strongly unsteady flowfield inside the combustion chamber. The results obtained give a clear insight of the main fluid dynamic events characterizing the very beginning of the ignition transient. A complex gaseous-piston-like gasdynamic behavior is evidenced as well as the important driving role of the finocyl geometrical configuration of the grain.
