In this invited review, I shall summarise the present state-of-knowledge in respect of the rate coefficients for gas-phase reactions that play an important role in determining the molecular abundances that are observed in the ISM. I shall place some emphasis on the interplay between observations, modelling and laboratory measurements. However, the main focus will be on how laboratory measurements and theory can be applied to predict the values of rate coefficients and their temperature-dependence for two main categories of reaction: those between ions and neutral molecules and those involving two neutral species.
