Data on the energy distribution of the ionic component of the Martian atmosphere in the region of interaction with the solar wind were obtained by independent electrostatic analyzers aboard Mars 5. Pronounced differences were observed in the energy spectra obtained upon entry into the zone of interaction by analyzers differing by a factor of two, indicating the presence of heavier ions than the main ionic components of the solar wind. The mean ion energy increased upon transition from the outer to the inner portion of the boundary layer. The heavy ion component decreased towards the outer portion of the boundary layer, where there was a large flux of light ions. The most likely heavy ion species is O+.
